Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.

This passage talks about God, and then says He laid down His life for us -- another passage showing us that Jesus is God.
We may not love as God does, because we don't understand it, we've never looked closely at it. How can you understand it? The best way is to look at how He laid down His life for us.
If we understand it, we can do the same -- selflessly give ourselves to others. This includes prayer, time, money, etc. This is the results and evidence of our love.
What He did for us is amazing, a mystery, a miracle. When we give to others, it appears as amazing, a mystery, a miracle. People notice this, it is unusual, it is evidence of God in your life, and is a picture of God.
Much sin is the result of selfishness, self-love, pridefulness. Much righteousness is selflessness, love of others, humility.
Does your family know how to be selfless by watching you, by learning from your example?
Selfishness may be the root of these sins -- discuss why: complaining, impatience, bitterness, love of money, sowing discord, ingratitude, silence, no backbone, laziness, greedy, robbing God of tithes/offerings, no servant's heart, unforgiving, revengeful, critical, adultery, over-indulgence, and gossip.
