1 Peter 1:6 - The Message

I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.

1 Peter 1:6 - Additional Comments

With the world, things are so uncertain. We have the threat of harm from terrorists, or from crazy folks who would hurt you or your family. We have the threat of financial problems, with potential failures of the stock market. We have a weak economy that continually threatens the security of our jobs. What a hope we have (vss 4-5)! Thanks be to God we have a certain future, a certain eternal home (2 Cor 5:1), that He is preparing for us!
Ever been in a class, a meeting, (a sermon or Sunday School class :-) ), that you were so into it, you didn't want it to end? Or, have you been in those, when it dragged on, you were dying for it to end? One was a delight, and one was torture. Isn't it odd, though, that you could be in one of those meetings, and one person considers it a delight, and another torture? And so are many circumstances in our life. What one person endures almost without a thought others struggle with enduring pain. If you have enduring pain, it doesn't have to be that way.
What is a trial? It is a circumstance that is considered to be adversity, to be painful, by the one involved. It's an experience that the person would tag as "not okay". The word also implies a "test", an experiment, to see how the person will act when things are "not okay". Whether a circumstance is "not okay" is how you see the circumstance.
Test the "okayness" factor of areas of your life. For each one of these, rate them from 1-5, 1 being "very not okay" (a big trial, might keep you awake at night), and 5 being "very okay" (it's going great). This is how it affects you, how much turmoil you personally feel from it. For each, mentally note why you chose that "okayness" rating.
- marriage, , job/school, money, parents (including in-laws), church, Sunday School, health, safety, cars, friends, house, conscience, thought life, other things you own, neighbors, other relatives, contentment, relationship with God, anything else?
I suppose the 1's and 2's are the trials. You may have had some part in them being there, or maybe not. But God has in hand in everything. He could prevent anything, He allows everything that exists, and may have caused them directly. Trials may be to prune (by pain, to make bigger, tougher, stronger), or to punish, or some of both. Remember God is actively involved in our lives, and desperately wants to draw is to Him. Sometime you'll receive the most trials when you are perfectly in God's will (e.g. Paul)!
These trials may be tiresome, may be grieving, yet we can still greatly rejoice! This verse acknowledges that trials may deeply grieve us, and that's okay! Yet it also gives us the hope that in the trials, we can have great joy! (1 Thess 5:16, 2 Cor 6:10, Matt 5:12)
For the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed (Rom 8:18).
