1 Peter 2:18 - The Message

You who are servants, be good servants to your masters—not just to good masters, but also to bad ones. What counts is that you put up with it for God’s sake when you’re treated badly for no good reason. There’s no particular virtue in accepting punishment that you well deserve. But if you’re treated badly for good behavior and continue in spite of it to be a good servant, that is what counts with God.

1 Peter 2:18 - New American Standard Bible

Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.

1 Peter 2:18 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Siervos, estén sujetos a sus amos con todo respeto, no sòlo a los que son buenos y afables, sino también a los que son insoportables.

1 Peter 2:18 - World English Bible

Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.

1 Peter 2:18 - Young's Living Translation

The domestics! be subjecting yourselves in all fear to the masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cross;

1 Peter 2:18 - Additional Comments

The implication is you are in a situation that you cannot (or choose not to) get out of, esp. for employment. You may not be able to change jobs for many reasons. No matter what kind of a boss you have, even the harsh, God requires you to be submissive, fear them, be good and *gentle* to them. Good and gentle behavior to the harsh is where God's Spirit in us really shines, and really shows the world that knowing God does make a difference (verses 19-21).
