Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, he does.

1 Peter 5:8 - Additional Comments

Interesting that right after Peter tells them to give all cares to God, giving them the peace of God, He jumps right into how the devil is trying to devour us. In our battle with the devil, God still says He is more than able, and these are cares we are to give to Him. We are to do battle, yet we are to release all care of this battle to God.
Note that the devil is an enemy, one dedicated to destroying us.
By his nature, the devil's entire being is consumed with this task -- to devour us. That is really not just his job, but who he is. Therefore, he is consumed with this goal, and to this end he works day and night.
The comparison to the lion shows the devil's power, intentions, and hunger for destruction. We cannot fight such an enemy, but God is more than powerful. This is a battle we cannot fight by ourselves. The only way to fight is given here and in the next verse.
In this battle we are to be sober, to show good judgment, to watch with quietness, to pay attention, to be temperate, in control.
We are also to be vigilant, relentless, not careless, never giving up, tenacious, always watching, always suspicious of danger, always ready to prevent him from succeeding (with God's power) -- because the devil may attack at any time.
We must always have our guard up, and never think that the war is over, that we are safe. ("The Marathon Man" -- "Is it safe?!" -- no!)
Give examples of where and how the devil attacks.
