1 Peter 5:9 - Additional Comments

The devil's main target in a person's life is his faith. If he can destroy and handicap your faith, he has succeeded in the battle. That is why we are encouraged here to be steadfast, unwavering in our faith. Ephesians 6:16 says that our greatest defense against the devil (in the armor of God) is "the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."
The devil is the author and source of these sufferings. They are raised from him. By resisting, and remaining steadfast, we defeat the devil. Rev 12:12 says that the devil has great wrath, because he knows he only has a short time, and then he will have no more influence on us. That can be encouraging to us -- our battle with him is only for a short while. Once our life is over, he will have no more influence on us.
1 Peter 4:12-19 says we can expect trials and sufferings. Here we see that we can take courage in that these same trials and sufferings are being experienced by other Christians around the world. What is happening to us is not unique. 1 Cor 10:13 in a similar way says the temptations we face have also been experienced by other Christians. And God provides every person in every temptation a way to overcome it. The same can be said of our sufferings.
