Interesting that Elkanah had a special love for Hannah (vs 5). Note that Elkanah did not love Hannah any less for her being barren.
A Jewish woman would be miserable just from the fact of being barren, but Peninnah doubled Hannah's misery. It does not say why Elkanah loved Hannah and not Peninnah. The character of Peninnah shown in this verse may have driven Elkanah to not be so fond of her.
