Even though Saul knew he was already anointed king of Israel, and had been transformed, he may not emotionally have yet been ready. Or, he may have hid out of humility, not wanting to make a show when he was chosen. Honor, like the shadow, follows those that flee from it, but flees from those that pursue it.
