David's brothers must have felt some of the same jealousy that Joseph's brothers had felt (Gen 37:4,5,11). See how they react in vs 17:28.
If you were one of David's brothers, what would you be feeling at this point? Jealousy? Embarrassment? Anger? Determination to be more of what God wants? May we have the humility to be glad when others succeed even though we may not. How difficult that is, and yet that is the humility God wants for us. The results cannot be changed, only how you react to it.
This was the beginning of God's plan for David. Look at all that was ahead for David - his conflicts with Saul, his affair with Bathsheba, his loss of his son, etc. If you were David, would you want to see God's full plan for your life ahead of time? Would you want to see God's full plan for your life now? Samuel feared going, even though He was so close to God. How much more we would fear if we could see the things we would have to face! Whether we can see it or not does not change the fact of what God's wants for us, and that he still requires us to obey.
