1 Samuel 9:7

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

This was not really a present, but a fee, for they didn't feel they could visit without some payment. They had no idea what the prophet would require, so they wanted to be prepared.
Both the servant and Saul felt the gift the servant suggested would be sufficient (9:8-10).
