Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

They haven't been working. Here they are exhorted to work in quietness (not showy to glorify that they are working), and as a result, eat from the fruit of their labors.
If they do it to show others how great is the fact that they work, they in effect have lost their reward.
