Amos 4:1 - Additional Comments

Since Amos was a shepherd, he speaks in terms he is familiar with. He compares those who live in luxury without care or concern to the cows who feed on the mountains of Samaria, whose pastures are exceptionally plush with their food, and who live without borders, free to graze where they wish, and who push weaker cattle out of their way for selfish gain. Compare to woman who parked illegally without care.
Those in luxury not only disregard the needy, they crush them, pushing them even further down, without conscience. They have a party with excess while those nearby starve, and encourage others to do the same.
"Husbands" may be more properly translated "masters". It may refer to those who are masters over the poor and needy. It may be the needy's very efforts that produces the wine.
These people felt invincible, but would find out they were far from it (verse 2). How many people have the arrogance or lack of care, feeling they are strong, invincible? How many young feed their own needs, not knowing what it is like to be weak? How many, once they start to lose what they had, look back at the feeling of being invincible? (Demetrio) What pride to you carry, not noticing those who are weak, or your lack of humble thankfulness for everything you have? ("For what do you have that you did not receive?" - 1 Cor 4:7)
