"Darius, son of Ahasuerus, born a Mede, became king over the land of Babylon. Daniel 9:1 - Additional Comments

Darius is the great reorganizer of the Persian Empire after Cyrus' sudden death and the revolts that followed. Darius killed the others who tried to stake claim to the throne. He put Persia on the map permanently. He eventually became the master of all the territory from India to eastern Europe, and organized an efficient and ruthless government. During his reign, the Jews returned from exile, and completed the new temple in Jerusalem. Darius even contributed funds for the project.
