Ephesians 4:17

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

The Ephesians were converted Gentiles. Walking in the way of the world is futile, or no value or gain. The Gentiles are wholly guided by vain things, things which have no eternal profit.
