Ephesians 5:4 - Additional Comments
The tongue is a small rudder which controls the entire ship, the entire body (James 3:4). In reality the only way to control the ship is to control the tongue, and the only way to control the tongue is by controlling the heart. Don't change your speech - change your heart. This is the only way to be imitators of God.
Filthiness - indecency. Anything that we do that gives others looking at us a poor image of God. It could be how we dress, what we talk about, what we laugh at, what movies we watch, etc.
Foolish talk - talk as a fool - Psalms 53:1, Psa 92:5-6, Prov 10:8, 10:18, 10:23, etc.
Coarse jesting which is not fitting - jokes with a hidden meaning, "I was just kidding". Basically any jokes that causes pain, that hurts, that dishonors God or people.
Whenever tempted to speak like this, replace it with thanks.
