And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

Moses interceded for them (see also vs 11-13). God had given the people a choice (vs 26). Those who did not return to God were killed, but those who did, were forgiven their sins.
