Exodus 32:8

They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Exodus 32:8 - Additional Comments

Apparently they viewed the golden calf as a representation of God, yet they were bowing down to the calf and worshipping it. It was a form of worship, but completely in the wrong direction. Just because something seems godly does not mean that it is. This applies to other religions and Christian cults. God demands that we worship Him, and worship in His way. How are we to worship?
