The Lord smelled the soothing aroma. Well, He didn't actually smell it, but detected it in His way, as we detect it with our noses. God responded with His covenant, once for all. This may be a foreshadow of Christ, for His sacrifice was a sweet-smelling aroma to God (Eph 5:2). If the sacrifice is acceptable, God views it as sweet, otherwise with a wrong heart or wrong motives, it is bitter (Isa 5:20, Jer 4:18).
The covenant was not being initiated, as He had earlier promised (Gen 6:18).
Note God did not deliver this to anyone, but spoke it to Himself.
Noah was 500 years old before his 3 sons were born (Gen 5:32). He was 600 years old during the flood (Gen 7:6). It had never rained before the flood, so Noah was 600 years old before he ever saw rain. Can you imagine what it was like for Noah every time it rained after the flood? Here it comes again!! But then, no, because God made this covenant that it would never happen again.
And God would never do it again, despite the fact that men may once get to the depraved state they were in before the flood. And we expect we may be at that state today.
There is nothing that this or future generations could do to inactivate this covenant, which made it completely unconditional. There is nothing mankind can do that would rescind this covenant, includng the so-called Global Warming.
Amazing that Noah and his family are the ancestors of all mankind. Even though they loved and followed God, their descendents grew farther and farther away, to follow after so many false Gods, and ignore God completely. We may leave a legacy of following God, but there is no guarantee those who come after us will. Each person owns his own relationship with God. Yet much of that does depend on us. This battle for our allegiance is fought from our youth, for our heart is evil from the beginning.
The Flood did not change the character of mankind, nor did it return him to the position of innocence, which he enjoyed before the Fall.
But it was a warning to man that God will not tolerate sin and whenever man chooses to sin, divine judgment soon follows.
