Hebrews 12:5 - Additional Comments

Verses 5-11 discuss the chastising we receive from our Lord. It refers to this as our exhortation as sons. Chastisement is punishment with the goal of correcting our ways. God's goal for us is perfection, holiness (Matt 5:48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."). See also vs 10 - it is so we can become partakers of His holiness. And vs 11 - to obtain the peaceable fruit of righteousness.
Yet, God balances His wishes for our holiness with our desires (Psalm 37:4, 21:2, 145:19, 1 John 5:14-15), for we are not under constant burdens even though we have not attained the goal of perfection. Consider this to be in the same way a good father chastises his son, and at time gives him good things, both with love.
