Hosea 1:3 - Additional Comments

This son, Jezreel (vs 4), was one of the "children of harlotry" (vs 2). They had 2 other children, a daughter and another son. Their names signify God's voice through Hosea -
- Jezreel means "God Scatters". In Jezreel, Jehu (King of Israel) continued in false worship. It was here that the battles began that ultimately led to the destruction of Israel in 722 BC. where they would be taken into captivity & scattered by the Assyrians.
- Lo-Ruhamah (vs 6) means "no mercy" (not pitied or not loved). Without the Lo (not) it means tender love within a family. Adding the negative shows something about Hosea and Gomer's relationship, and similarly the relationship between God and Israel. It implies a breakdown of the relationship. Apparently Hosea could not give this daughter his love, because he suspected Gomer had been with another man and the child wasn't his. Contrast "bare him a son" with "bare a daughter".
- Lo-Ammi (vs 9) means "not my people". The name probably reflects Hosea's relation to Gomer. Hosea was sure this boy was not his son.
Hosea's marriage and family served as a daily reminder to him and the people around him about the sins of the nation, and the consequences they will suffer if they don't change their ways (which they didn't).
