But now, God’s Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob,
the One who got you started, Israel:
"Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you.
I’ve called your name. You’re mine.
When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end—
Because I am God, your personal God,
The Holy of Israel, your Savior.
I paid a huge price for you:
all of Egypt, with rich Cush and Seba thrown in!
That’s how much you mean to me!
That’s how much I love you!
I’d sell off the whole world to get you back,
trade the creation just for you.

Isaiah 43:1 - Additional Comments

Wow, what a contrast to the previous verse, 42:25! There it talks about God pouring out on Israel "the fury of His anger", yet here it talks about His protection so Israel should not fear!
God allows us to suffer the consequences of our sin, whether by natural consequences or by His punishment. Yet He protects us from any evil that threatens us.
Compare this to how a parent raises a child. The parent sometimes allows pain in a child's life, either by natural consequences, or by the parent inflicting the pain. Yet, when evil threatens, the parent is there to protect the child. Our relationship with God is the same.
Then, why do Christians suffer? God's ultimate plan is to accomplish His will, and for us to glorify Him. He pieces all together so that is accomplished, in many lives. We have no idea how all this fits together. His primary purpose is to bring people to a strong relationship with Him, and to build our character. Circumstances are not the priority. We must view all of life with this in mind.
-----
How could God not know my name, for He was the one who formed me in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16).
For God to call you by your name, He must know your name. Picture God calling you by your name.
Why does He call? He calls us to redeem us.
He formed us, we rebelled in sin, He calls us, He redeems us, and we belong to Him.
