Doom to you who buy up all the houses
and grab all the land for yourselves—
Evicting the old owners,

Taking over the country,
   leaving everyone homeless and landless.
I overheard God-of-the-Angel-Armies say:
"Those mighty houses will end up empty.
Those extravagant estates will be deserted.
A ten-acre vineyard will produce a pint of wine,
a fifty-pound sack of seed, a quart of grain."

Wo [to] those joining house to house, Field to field they bring near, till there is no place, And ye have been settled by yourselves In the midst of the land!

Isaiah 5:8 - Additional Comments

Ask: Is it wrong to party with instruments, with music? In verses 8-15, what is God condemning that He sees them doing?
(Note the critical phrase, "they do not regard the work of the LORD, Nor consider the operation of His hands."
Ask: What were the results? (see verse 14)

Discuss: What is Sheol?
" Sheol is Hebrew for the "abode of the dead", the "underworld", or "pit". The word "hades" was substituted for "sheol" when the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek (see Septuagint). The New Testament (written in Greek) also uses "hades" to refer to the abode of the dead. In verse 14, the implication is that Sheol is hell.

Summary (5:1-14)
" "Meet Divine Expectations" - what does God hope to see in us?
o Review the concept of the vine, and who that is.
o Review the concept that people need to deal with sin, that sin does not go unpunished. Don't be like Israel.
o Review the concept that we are grafted in. Therefore, sometime pruning is in order, not because of sin, but to build us up so we can produce rich and bountiful fruit.
o Review the concept of talents and gifts, to have a focus for growing fruit.
o God had a passion for Israel, His children. God has a passion for you, His child.
