Jeremiah 19:1 - Additional Comments

The "elders of the people" are those who rule the people politically (see also vs 3), and the "elders of the priests" are those who lead the people spiritually. Jeremiah is asked by God to take some of the political and religious leaders with him, so they will hear the words God wants them to hear (vs 2).
Isn't it interesting that Israel had practically ignored God and turned their backs on Him, yet they still had spiritual elders. I wonder if they still performed some of the duties of elders and priests as God had laid it out for them. Elders are selected because of their experience and wisdom. In effect though, they were useless as elders.
