This place, in addition to being called the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, was also called Tophet (see vs 14).
The Potsherd Gate was probably a place where potsherds were piled and discarded. Potsherds are pieces of broken pottery from clay pots that had been formed and fired before being broken. At one point David described his weakened condition using an analogy to potsherds: "My strength is dried up like a potsherd..." (Psalm 22:15) Potsherd are good for scraping sores (Job 2:8), for scooping fire or water (Isaiah 30:14), or as writing instruments. (They can also now be used for archeological dating.)
