Jeremiah 2:19 - Additional Comments

Note in this verse how is says they are being corrected by the penalties of their sin and not by their fear of God.
Unfortunately the primary way that people learn from their mistakes is the penalties they endure because of those mistakes. They are rebuked by their mistakes. A person should change, should toss away sin, because God convicts them, because they become repentant and determined to follow God. It is so critical that the primary source of repentance is sorrow before God, not as a result of pain because of the sin. In those cases a person is sorry for the pain, but not necessarily for the sin. True repentance focuses totally on the sin, and how it violates God's law, and how it breaks fellowship with God.
