Jeremiah 2:20 - The Message

"A long time ago you broke out of the harness.
   You shook off all restraints.
You said, ’I will not serve!’
   and off you went,
Visiting every sex-and-religion shrine on the way,
   like a common whore.
You were a select vine when I planted you
   from completely reliable stock.
And look how you’ve turned out—
a tangle of rancid growth, a poor excuse for a vine.
Scrub, using the strongest soaps.
   Scour your skin raw.
The sin-grease won’t come out. I can’t stand to even look at you!"
   God’s Decree, the Master’s Decree.

Jeremiah 2:20 - New American Standard Bible

"For long ago I broke your yoke {And} tore off your bonds; But you said, `I will not serve!' For on every high hill And under every green tree You have lain down as a harlot.

Jeremiah 2:20 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

"Porque desde hace tiempo rompì tu yugo
Y arranqué tus coyundas;
Pero dijiste: 'No serviré.'
Porque sobre toda colina alta
Y bajo todo árbol frondoso
Te echabas como ramera.

Jeremiah 2:20 - Additional Comments

God did huge things for the Israelites - he freed them from slavery. In response the Israelites told God they would not sin.. but in reality it was a lie - everywhere they went to "played the harlot" and went after other gods.
Do you lie to God? Do you actually try to trick God into believing something about your intentions or motives, when it's not true? Maybe you have tried to justify something so much that you have come to believe the lie?
