John 1:42

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

When it says Jesus looked at him, it means Jesus fixed his gaze on him intently. Jesus was looking ahead at the life of Peter, knowing and seeing what Peter would become. This reminds me of the movie Terminator, in which a cyborg assassin called "The Terminator" is sent back through time to 1984 to kill the seemingly innocent Sarah Connor-a woman whose unborn son will lead the human race to victory in a bitter future war with a race of machines. Both the cyborg and the soldier who also went back knew what she would become, and spoke to her as such, even though when they met she seemed nothing like what she would become. Except Jesus knows ahead of time what Peter would become before it ever happens.
To be given a new name signified being given a new reality, a new view of the person. Jesus saw not what Peter was, but what he would become, a rock on which His church would be built (see notes on Matt 16:18). The reason why Jesus could give Peter a new name, was because Peter's life was transformed by following closely with Jesus. Are you following Jesus closely, so He could give you a new name, seeing what you will become? Or are you so content with your life and walk with Him as it stands that you aren't striving to make it more, so Jesus could see what you are becoming, and could give you a new name?
Or, are you losing ground, and the name you'll deserve is one not so desirable?
If we seek Him, that we can be confident that He who began a good work in us will complete it (Phil 1:6).
