Jesus said He would wake up Lazarus (vs. 11), and now he states that Lazarus is dead. Yet still, they did not expect a resurrection from the dead.
This was a miracle, that Jesus knew of Lazarus' death, without anyone telling Him. A miracle has already taken place.
