Martha and Mary and Lazarus must have had a lot of respect in their area, for all these mourners to come out. Note that many Jews came, despite the fact that it was probably well known of this family's devotion to Jesus. These Jews were not believers -- later some believed, some didn't (see vss. 45-46). If Lazarus had been healed from a sickness, and not death, very few or no Jews would have seen it, because they would not have come out for just a sickness. This gave a great opportunity for Jesus to show who He was to many people.
