The messengers were probably runners, either whom Martha had sent to watch for Jesus, or who saw Jesus, knew Martha, and ran to tell her.
Martha was so excited that Jesus was coming, that she left the mourners to go meet Him. She put aside the circumstances around her, and focused solely on Jesus.
