John 13:2 - Additional Comments

This chapter has several events surrounding eating together. In those days, eating together had a far deeper meaning than today.
- When a visitor would arrive, their feet would be washed, often by a servant.
- The meal would symbolize both a token of friendship and a form of a covenant commitment to the relationship. It was considered despicable to eat with someone and then betray them. That is why when Jesus offered Judas bread (verses 26-27), and Judas leaving immediately after left to betray Him, heightened how detestable was his betrayal. See Psalm 41:9.
- Hospitality shows a great sense of openness, comfort, and acceptance. Hebrews 13:2 says to welcome strangers, for they may be angels.
- This passage shows Jesus giving them extreme hospitality, for supper was served, Jesus washed their feet, and then Jesus broke bread and drink with them (without Judas), as an offer of acceptance. Jesus offered them His very best. They are having ultimate fellowship.
- This was an even more significant meal, for it was His last supper with them, and where He taught about Communion (the Lord's Supper) to remember Him and what He was about to do.
- The way to honor the poor was to invite them in for a meal, a feast (Luke 14:12-14).
- Jesus compared His invitation for eternal life to the invitation to a great supper (Luke 14:16-24). It's also called the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev 19:9, 19).
