John 4:16 - Additional Comments

Jesus takes a sudden turn in the conversation. At least to her it would look like it. But in reality, Jesus was not - he had been referring to her spiritual need. He is ready to show to her her real need, her spiritual need, not, as she was expecting, the easing of her many trips to the well. He brings the matter of personal sin uncomfortably into sharp focus. He brought her face to face with her sinful lifestyle, to discover her real need. In order to receive the living water Jesus offered, she needed to address the nature of her sinful life.
He had to jolt her conscience to awaken it to her real need.
Note also he showed her her need before showing her what to do about it. Before telling people to receive Christ, we should show them their need for Christ.
