Why did Jesus not stay in the city, but go up onto a mountain? It may have been so the large masses could better hear Him, or maybe to keep them better organized, especially when they were being fed (vs 11). The area where Jesus went was mostly covered by grass (vs 10).
Note that the masses had not yet followed Jesus to the mountain. They soon were there, in verse 5.
