Jonah 1:2 - Additional Comments

Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire, in what is today northern Iraq. The Assyrian Empire ruled the world for about 300 years (900-607 B.C.). It began to rise to a world power around the time of the division of Israel, around the time of Solomon. It gradually absorbed and destroyed the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
Oddly, Jonah was called to preserve the life of the nation that was already in the process of destroying his own nation. Assyria was a brutal and relentless military machine, and was closing in on God's people. No wonder Jonah ran in the opposite direction! (verse 3)
This is the only instance where a prophet was sent to people who were non-Jews. But this shows God cares about non-Jews. He also showed this in Genesis 12:3, Isaiah 49:6, and Romans 10:12-13.
