Joshua 1:7 - Additional Comments

Why was Joshua told to be strong and courageous? There will be conflict - enemies they must conquer to possess the land. How would He succeed? Not by great armies or knowledge, but by obedience to God. We too will face conflicts, for "we wrestle not against flesh and blood ... against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph. 6:12) We are to use the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17) to defeat the enemy, as Jesus did (Matt 4:1-11).
Moses faithfully recorded all that God had spoken to him. Now Israel must know that Word and obey it.
"Observe" in Hebrew is "shamar". This means hear with the intent to obey. It is listening for what to do to align with what God wants. Obedience didn't happen because of reacting to a message - it should be a proactive activity, looking for what to do, i.e. "please tell me". When we have our quiet time, we should be hearing to obey, looking for what God has to say that will change my ways and my life. Don't look in the mirror and forget what you see (James 1:22-25, Rom 2:13).
It's got to be tough to be either a reporter or a police investigator. Their primary job is to get information from people who usually don't want to provide it. They must learn to keep digging and digging until they can unearth the facts.
" How about Gary Condit? Does he know anything about Chandra Levy's disappearance?
" What about Ted Kennedy, and his testimony of what happened at Chappaquiddick? How did Mary Jo Kopechne really die?
" How about O.J Simpson? He said he didn't do it.
" How about Richard Nixon? What about the missing 18.5 minutes on tape #342, containing a conversation between Mr. Nixon and his top aide, Bob Haldeman in their first White House meeting after the Watergate burglary?
" What about the Kennedy assassination? Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone, or was he prompted to do it by others?
How difficult was it to gather accurate information by reporters and investigators in these situations?
The fact is, people are not forthcoming with incriminating or embarrassing information.
Sometimes I sympathize with those who are doing the investigation.
This is not directed to any particular individual. It may not apply to you. Or it might. Tell me:
" How are you and your wife getting along? What are you hiding?
" How are your finances? What are you hiding?
" Are you struggling with any particular sin? What are you hiding?
" Why won't you let us help you? What are you hiding?
God hates sin. Are you loving sin so much you can't hate it?
God wants perfection (Joshua 1:7). But what He requires is to "hear with the intent to obey". Are you hearing with no intent to obey?
Read Matthew 11:20-22. The people of these cities heard and saw, but did not change their heart. God does not require perfection, but he does require a heart which is willing to hear to obey.
Do you want to hear to obey? Let's interrupt the lesson briefly to pray. Pray to be filled with the Spirit. Pray for purification of thoughts and attitudes. Pray for the Spirit to give you a heart to hate sin, and to want to obey. Pray for repentance. For those who repent, thank Him for the freedom He gives (Gal 5:1) - even though we may still struggle with sin, we are no longer slaves to sin, because we are giving our heart to God.
God is pleased more with proper attitudes rather than pious actions (1 Sam 15:22).
Because of God's grace, it's not really a sin issue - it's a heart issue. We must have the necessary attitude to be pleasing and accepted by God. Such an attitude assures success, and without this attitude, you are assured of failure.
If you are not humbly yielding to Him, you are rebelling against Him.
