Luke 1:5 - Additional Comments

See notes on Herod in Acts 12:1.
Zacharias was a priest belonging to the order or family of Abijah, one of the 24 contingents of priests - his was the eighth contingent (1 Chr 24:1-19). He served at the Temple in Jerusalem twice a year, for about a week each time, each week beginning and ending on a Sabbath (2 Chr 23:8). It was on one of these duties that he had his vision (verse 11).
Both Zacharias and Elizabeth were from priestly lineage, so any child would also be (i.e. John the Baptist).
