The crowded conditions due to the census forced the family to stay in a stable, and for Jesus to bed in a manger.
The manger was probably a carved-out block of limestone, not wood. These were typical in this area of the country. The manger may not have been near the inn, and may have even been in a cave. Some early church writings say the inn was a cave complex on the edge of the city. In fact, beneath the Church of the Nativity (originally built around 325 AD under Constantine) there is a complex network of caves. The text here says nothing about where they slept, only where Jesus slept. They wound up staying in Bethlehem for a little while, possibly around 2 years, because at some point lived in a house, where the magi came to visit Him (Matthew 2:11). After Bethlehem they fled to Egypt for several years (Matt 2:13-15); some speculate until Jesus was 10 years old.
Look at how lowly was Jesus' circumstances - his family had so little weight in the community (or money) that arrangements could not be made for a nine month pregnant girl, despite the fact that inn's often placed multiple people in their rooms.
This is the first Christmas. Why are so many people depressed around this holiday? Because our culture focuses primarily upon family, gifts (finances), and friends. If that is the root of happiness, it's no wonder, since these are disasters for so many people! How do you react at the time of Christmas? Do you need to examine what is your focus?
