Luke 23:1 - Additional Comments

Until this point, Jesus had only been presented before the Jewish leaders. In 22:63-65 it was Jewish guards who mocked and beat Him, not Romans.
Pontius Pilate was the governor of the Roman province of Judea from AD 26 until around AD 36. His biographical details before and after his appointment to Judea are unknown, but have been supplied by legend, which included the detail that his wife's name was Procula (she is canonized as a saint in Orthodox Christianity) and that his birthplace was Fortingall in Perthshire, Scotland, or Tarraco (now Tarragona) in Spain. Pilate himself is a saint in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
