We typically don't expect much from those we know well, because we know of their limitations. Here they saw Christ's poverty, lack of education, ordinary vocation, and lack of priestly heritage. We must work to avoid this, with our children, our spouses, others in our family, and our co-workers. We should expect the best, and allow them to excel. Expecting less may actually prevent them from success they are capable of.
They previously viewed Christ as equal or inferior, so they could not accept Him as superior.
