Luke 5:2 - Additional Comments

There were 2 boats, one owned by Simon (vs 3) with his brother Andrew (Matt 4:18), the other by Zebedee, whose sons James and John fished with him (Mark 1:20). When Jesus walked up they were still fishing out on the water (Matt 4:18), but they soon came to land, frustrated, without fish, and were now washing their nets.
In 1986 a wooden vessel from the first century was discovered near Nof Ginnosaur on the lake's northwestern shore. Studies have determined the type of wood that was used (mainly cedar and oak), the style of construction (mortise and tenon joints), the date (on the basis of construction techniques, pottery and Carbon 14 tests) and the size (26 by 7 feet - big enough for 15 men). This is believed to be the type of boat that Peter would have used.
Note that the nets were washed on land, for they were out of the boats when they washed their nets. After washing their nets, they must have returned them to the boats, since they would be used when Jesus was aboard.
