How are we to understand this? Some claim there was an eastern parable about an entrance gate to a certain city through which a camel laden with goods could not enter. Still others suggest there was a small gate into Jerusalem call "the camel's eye", through which a camel could enter only on its knees (see Gen 24:11), intimating that the only way a rich man could enter the kingdom of heaven is on his knees. No credible evidence exists for either of these explanations. Jesus used the illustration of something impossible, because He was saying it is impossible without God to enter eternal life (see verse 27).
