What were the disciples amazed at? Probably the extreme requirements for eternal life. Funny, they probably didn't realize how severe the requirements really are! (i.e. truly impossible)
They may also have been surprised because the differences between the rich and poor in their days were extreme, and the rich probably could have anything they wanted. These people were used to the rich living on easy street, not having the MOST difficult time!
