Mark 10:46 - Additional Comments

Jericho was about 15 miles north of Jerusalem. Jericho is believed to be one of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. Situated well below sea level Jericho is the lowest permanently inhabited site on earth, at about 850 feet below sea level. Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of over 20 successive settlements in Jericho.
So, Jericho was naturally on their way to Jerusalem from Galilee. They were on their way out of Jericho, about a half day's journey from Jerusalem.
Jesus and His disciples had rarely been this far south before, yet they were still mobbed by people.
Why did they mention who the father of Bartimaeus was? I believe because they did not use last names like we do, and it was a way to clearly identify the individual. Note to identify Jesus they called Him "Jesus of Nazareth" (see vs 47).
This must have been a fairly busy road, otherwise Bartimaeus would not have been there begging - he would have probably need to be in Jericho itself.
How easily it would have been to miss Bartimaeus because of the large crowd, and he was seated by the side of the road. Plus, it was common to find beggars like him in these locations.
