So Bartimaeus was seated on the side of the road begging, and he heard a huge crowd, probably a very unusually large crowd, passing by. He either asked or was offered the news that this was Jesus passing by. Jesus had never been in this area, but was so well known that Bartimaeus knew who He was.
Bartimaeus referred to Jesus as the "Son of David". This was one of Jesus' titles. Seventeen verses in the New Testament describe Jesus as the "son of David." The Messiah was the fulfillment of the prophecy of the seed of David (2 Samuel 7:14-16). Jesus was the promised Messiah, which meant He was of the seed of David. Primarily though, when Christ was referred to as the Son of David, it was meant to refer to His Messianic title as the Old Testament prophesied concerning Him. Bartimaeus was calling out to the Messiah.
But wow, as soon as he heard, what excitement, what hope! Here was the Messiah that was to come, and here was the first and probably only time Bartimaeus was have a chance with Jesus! Bartimaeus was still seated (see vs 49, where he was asked to rise up). It was probably not safe for a blind man to walk without aid, especially with a great crowd there.
There was a lot of noise and commotion, but Bartimaeus was still determined to find Jesus.
With Bartimaeus cry for Jesus' mercy, He was asking for a gift, not demanding something. Anytime we pray, it should be with this same attitude. Father, have mercy on me, hear my prayer. We are no different than the beggar in our need for the mercy of Jesus.
