He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Jesus quoted from Isaiah 29:13 - Therefore the LORD said: "Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men..."
Jesus didn't answer directly the question, because He addressed the crux of the issue - the real problem was in the hearts of the Pharisees. They did not care about the people, or even honoring God, but held in esteem the laws. In fact Jesus knew their hearts were far from God. Here were the most esteemed religious leaders for the Jews, the men whose primary job was to lead the people towards God, and they themselves were far from Him.
