Mark 7:7 - Additional Comments

They did go through the motions of worshipping God, but God said it was a waste of their time. It was vanity. And Jesus makes it clear that what they had been teaching was not from God, but solely from men. Their hearts were far from God, and thus their teachings were far from God. The principle is that the actions follow the heart. If the heart is messed up, the life will be, and if the heart is on target with God, the life will follow.
Mat 7:15 "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
Mat 7:16 "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they?
Mat 7:17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
Mat 7:18 "A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.
Mat 7:19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Mat 7:20 "So then, you will know them by their fruits.
Do you think the Pharisees recognized their need for God through Jesus words? No - the evidence is there throughout Jesus' ministry. They didn't realize it, but they were acting spiritual, but were not. How many in our churches don't realize it - they are playing the part of a Christian, but do not have a relationship with God?
Do you recognize your spiritual needs, or do you continue to miss them? Ask someone close to you (e.g. spouse) - is there any area of your life that is not on target with God? What are the fruits of your life? The only practical way to fix your heart is through focused prayer and the study of the Bible. How do you befriend someone? You spend time with them. The same is true with God. And without that time, it is difficult to be close.
