Matthew 16:18 - Additional Comments

The Catholic Church believes that "this passage (especially 16:17-19) proves that Peter was the first pope. 'The Catholic Church teaches that our Lord conferred on St. Peter the first place of honor and jurisdiction in the government of his whole church, and that same authority has always resided in the popes, or bishops of Rome, as being the successors of St. Peter, even descendents ("the Apostolic Succession"). Consequently, to be true followers of Christ all Christians, both among the clergy and laity, must be in communion with the See of Rome, where Peter rules in the person of his successor.' I think Jesus was talking to Peter at this point, but that does not negate the other apostles also being a rock upon which the church is built.
This passage must be balanced with other passages that discuss the church and the rock -
- The Jews in the wilderness "all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ." (1 Corinthians 10:1-4).
- In Deut 32, (verses 4,15, etc.) God is repeatedly called "the Rock:"
- Jesus identified Himself as the rejected "rock", the chief cornerstone, in fulfillment of Psalm 118:22 (Matthew 21:41-45).
- Peter also identified Jesus in this manner (Acts 4:11-12, 1 Pet 2:4-7).
- The Old Testament speaks in this manner (Isaiah 28:16).
- The church is a temple which Christ is the Builder of (Zech. 6:11-13).
- By the working of his Spirit with the preaching of his word He adds souls to his church, and so builds it up with living stones. We are God's building. 1 Peter 2:4-5.
- Jesus is the foundation, not Peter. 1 Cor 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Also, the Catholic Church claims the popes were infallible in their teachings, yet we see Peter making mistakes in his, e.g. verses 22-23, Gal 2:11-21.
Notice who does the building - not the apostles, but Jesus Himself. See John 6:44.
These verse make it clear on which Rock the church is actually built.
You may find fault in the church, but it is the only boat that will take you to the right port.
