Peter recaps this experience in 2 Pet 1:16-18. There he describes it as being "eyewitnesses of His majesty", and says that there Christ "received from God the Father honor and glory". This is Peter's summary of what took place. It was to show how majestic Christ is, and to show Him receiving the proper honor and glory from God. We need to give Christ honor and glory, as much as we can.
2 Peter 1:16-18 also verifies that it really took place, and was not a vision.
We picture Jesus as the human that He was, but actually this was out of norm for Him, for normally He is in His heavenly glory. This gives us a glimpse of His ordinary, normal state. It also gives us a true glimpse of who He truly is, the Son of God, the glorious One. We should never think of Him n His common state -- we need to realize who He truly is. It reminds me of TV movies where an alien makes himself to look human, but when pressed or when he thinks no one is looking, he transforms to his ordinary form. In that case it is usually hideous or bizarre, but in Jesus' case it is glorious.
Seeing His true essence, it becomes even more remarkable when you look at the humble circumstances of His birth, baptism, daily living, washing the disciples feet, suffering, and death.
Having a good view of the grand things to come helps us endure the temporary sufferings of this world. This may have especially help d these 3, and especially Peter, to endure all that was to come for them.
This appearance corresponds to what we know about the Godhead in heaven, that God is light (1 Jn. 1:5), Jesus dwells in the unapproachable light (1 Tim. 6:16), God covers himself with light (Ps. 104:2). This is Jesus appearing in the form of God.
When Moses would go before the presence of God (Exo 34:34-35), God radiance was so strong that Moses face would continue to glow afterwards.
