Matthew 2:11 - Additional Comments

Note the wise men found Jesus and His family in a house. They were no longer in the stable, where the shepherds found Him (Luke 2:15-16).
The magi (wise men) worshipped Jesus. It was true worship (John 4:20-24), compared to what Herod offered (verse 8) (which was worship neither in spirit nor truth).
See other notes on worship in John 4:24 and Psalms 100.
What does the word for worship mean? proskuneo - to prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore).
- homage - attests to the greater worth or influence of another; ceremony by which a man acknowledges himself the subordinate of someone who has greater worth or authority.
Therefore "worship" of God means to attest to His ultimate worth and our worthless without Him, and in that position to fear Him and give Him honor and reverence.
Worship:
" Abraham knew he needed to worship God before the Law and Commandments (Gen 22:5)
" God asks for our worship (Exo 24:1, 2 Kings 17:35-36)
" The angels of God worship Him (Heb 1:6)
" We are not to worship angels (Rev 22:8-9)
" We are to worship no other god (or Satan) - God is a jealous God (Exo 34:14, Deut 8:19, 2 Kings 17:35-36, Dan 3:16-18,28-29, Mat 4:9-10)
" We are not even to worship God at their altars, but you can at His holy places (Deut 12:3-5, Psa 99:5-6. Psa 132:7)
" You also can worship God each in your own place, in every nation - the location is not important (Zep 2:11, John 4:20-24)
" Many of the Jewish festivals were for the purpose of worshiping God, the yearly worship during the Feast of the Tabernacles (Deut 26:10, Zec 14:16-17)
" Non-Jews are allowed to worship Him during the festivals (John 12:20)
" You can worship God in other ways than what is described in the Law (Acts 18:12-13)

" Eventually, all non-Christians will wind up worshiping the beast (Rev 13:1,8)
" We are to worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:20-24)
" Sincerity is never enough to worship God. It must be combined with truth. (Romans 10:2-3)
" To worship any but the one true God is to practice idolatry (Lev 26:1)
" True worship must be towards the One who is Truth - Jesus (John 14:6)
" True worship of God is prompted and produced by the Holy Spirit, which comes from trusting in Christ as the Messiah. (Matt. 3:11, Luke 11:3, John 7:39, John 14:26, Acts 5:32)
" See Romans 14:17-18, Eph 1:13-14, 4:30.
Those who cannot truly worship, because of their view of Jesus:
- Jehovah's Witnesses? He is the archangel Michael. He came to earth as a man, died on a stake & rose invisibly as a ghost.
- Mormons? Simply one god in a group of many gods. Brother of Satan, & cross & blood of Christ is foolishness. Deny the virgin birth.
- Christian Science? Jesus a pleasant divine idea. Believe in the trinity but say it is "life, truth and love".
- Sun Myung Moon & Unification Church? Jesus was a man who failed, & Sun Myung Moon is the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ.
- Bahais? (Bahia Templer) Jesus one of 9 great world manifestations. Say it doesn't matter what religion you believe, all basically the same
- Unitarians? Jesus was a good man but his follower mistakenly deified him
- Spiritists? Jesus is an advanced medium in the sixth sphere in the astrological projection
- Maharishi & Transcendental Meditation? Jesus was an enlightened guru who never suffered or died for anyone.
The gifts they gave to Jesus:
- Gold - the most valuable known meta (signifying giving God the best you have to offer, or what is most valuable to you)
- Incense - a fragrant aroma - what it means to God when we come to Him; also 2 Cor 2:15 "For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing."
- Myrrh: a spice used for embalming to protect from decay or oblivion, as we shall be saved from our deserved fate (Acts 2:21, Rev 21:8).
