Matthew 26:22 - Additional Comments

Notice that the apostles did not know Judas heart, for they didn't suspect it was him. He must have been able to hide it well, or only turned against them near the end.
Imagine in a country where Christianity is illegal, that you have met secretly with a dozen others, and the pastor who each week would lead your secret group in learning about Jesus. Then during one meeting the pastor, in the midst of the meal, says that one of them had betrayed him, and that his time is at hand. That's close, but not quite the same, since Judas betrayal had not happened - we see them each wondering if they would become the one who betrays.
Once Judas did the betrayal, then how did the disciples feel about Judas?
What a great question they asked - "Will I betray you?" This shows that they were afraid they would fail in sin. We should never be so arrogant to think that we will not commit a sin, that we won't do things like so-and-so does. We need to be afraid of ourselves, as the apostles were. We need to not play near the borders, or think we can handle it. Fear sin, stay far away from temptation, recognize how weak each of us truly is. (Prov 4:14-15)
Jesus prompted them to look inside themselves for sin before Communion, as we are encouraged to do (1 Cor 11:28).
