This was easily the most difficult challenge Jesus would ever face. Can you name yours? Are you still in the middle of it? How have you been reacting? Compare to Jesus' reactions.
Interesting -- Jesus seemed to be asking for their support. Jesus also got support and strength from the visit of an angel (Luke 22:43). We are promised that the Holy Spirit, the great Comforter, is there to comfort us in our hour of need (John 14:26) And, God comforts us so that we can be a comforter to others (2 Cor 1:3-4).
What strength we can get from others during difficult times (Eccl 4:9-10, Prov 27:17). Even when they don't provide the desired support, as these disciples did not here. We should take this as a challenge to be ready and committed to supporting others. Are you ready and committed to do that?
I wonder what the disciples thought of this comment. Jesus they knew to be God, with an invincible spirit, yet now He is overwhelmed by sorrow. I expect they had gotten used to not knowing what to expect! But I also expect that Jesus was a very passionate person (contrary to how we usually picture Him), and they were used to that.
